How Intel Handles New Threats
In the last 18 months, Intel, the 38-year-old semiconductor giant, has lost a significant portion of its market share to AMD. The company’s stock has fallen 35% in the last year. Now, the company is taking stock of this “crisis” situation and deciding how to get back on track.
For starters, Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, plans to get rid of money-losing products. He will probably get out of the cell phone and telecommunications market. Another product that didn’t do as well as expected was the Itanium microprocessor, which customers thought was too expensive. Another way Intel hopes to recapture some of its market share is by launching a new power-efficient chip. That news is expected around June 26th, so stay tuned.
I had an idea that maybe Intel would like to use – a new kind of printer. This printer would have an Intel chip that would make it print each page faster because the ink cartridges would not have to go back and forth. The ink would be deposited on each page as the sheet of paper feeds through the printer.
Two-dollar Bills
As you probably know, two-dollar bills are no longer being made. If you want a two-dollar bill, just go to your local bank and they should have them there. If not, you can ask the bank to order some for you, usually at no charge. However, you may have to order a minimum quantity. Two-dollar bills from the years 1928, 1953, and 1963 are the most common. The first modern U.S. two-dollar bill came out in 1976, for the U.S. bicentennial celebration. You can order the common green seal two-dollar bill, or the rarer red seal two-dollar bill. The United States has been making these bills since the Civil War.

Giants Baseball Recap
I got to go to the Giants-Pirates game on Saturday, June 10th. It was a cold, gray day at the ball park, but it was still fun. I got to sit next to the mayor, which made it more fun. I just wish the Giants had won, but they lost 2-0. On Sunday, they lost again by a score of 7-5, even though they were ahead 5-2 at one point. I hope they figure out how to start winning games again! This week, the Giants travel to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks, then, on to Seattle.

Kitty Corner – How to Brush Your Cat’s Teeth
Most cats need their teeth cleaned by a veterinarian by the time they’re three or four years old. By that age, most cats have already developed gum disease. What can you do to help your cat keep its teeth in good shape? You can brush its teeth! You don’t use a regular toothbrush, though. You can start by taking your cat to a quiet, enclosed room (so it can’t escape!). Talk in a calm voice as you gently pull back your kitty’s lips to expose its teeth and gums. Use a piece of gauze to wipe the outside of the upper teeth. Hopefully, your cat will like the massage. Then you can graduate to a pet toothbrush that you put on like a finger glove. Did you know there are poultry- and seafood-flavored toothpastes for cats? If you put a little on the pet toothbrush and let your cat lick it, the cat should get used to the idea. Good luck!
Sunnyvale Health Care Center (SVHCC)
On Tuesday, June 6th, my mom and I got a tour of the Sunnyvale Health Care Center from their Admissions/Marketing director, Erin Casey. We were greeted at the front door by an orange and white kitty named Beanie Bert. He is one of the kitties who provides “pet therapy” to the residents. I know how soft and sweet kitties feel, so I thought that was a great idea!
Erin showed us the physical therapy room, which had a pretty mural of an outdoor scene on the walls. She also showed us the panel on the wall that has all the room numbers on it, and lights that light up next to the room number if someone presses the call button for help. Erin said that within a few days of a new patient being admitted, she asks them how they would rate the Health Care Center on response time and quality of food, among other things. She said that one patient reported that they served the best “hospital” food he had ever tasted!
The Sunnyvale Health Care Center is run by the Chavez family. They call their approach “family caring for families.” The family’s mom/grandma even lives there! They always have lots of activities, including movies, piano music, and “happy feet” time, where they play dancing music throughout the entire facility. If you want to visit, they are located at 1291 S. Bernardo Avenue at Fremont Avenue in Sunnyvale, of course!
