Meet the Candidates for District Attorney

California’s primary election is coming up on Tuesday, June 6th. One of the races is for District Attorney of Santa Clara County, and there are four candidates (listed in alphabetical order): Marc Buller, Delores Carr, Jim Shore, and Karyn Sinunu. Here is some information about the candidates, which came from their web sites.

Marc Buller’s statement from his web site (www.marcbuller.com

Here’s the translation:
Never has there been a Mexican or Latino District Attorney of our county. We need more lawyers and police who speak Spanish and understand our people and culture in order to have a judicial system that is just.
Marc Buller is the grandson of Mexican immigrants. Marc’s grandparents wanted a better life for their children, like many families in our Latin community.
Marc Buller wants to be the voice of the Latin community in San Jose and Santa Clara County and he needs your support and your vote!

Jim Shore’s endorsement from the Metro newspaper, found at
www.shoreforda.com:
The replacement of longtime DA George Kennedy has been a particularly Machiavellian succession characterized by a nasty race. The unfortunate politicization of this arm of the justice system has divided the prosecutor's office and the ecosystem of agencies that interact with it. Members of the public have a direct interest in how well this agency performs its role, because public safety affects all of us. The person best equipped to unite the office following this bruising race is Jim Shore. An experienced crime fighter who organized the California Prosecutors Association, he is well equipped to boost internal morale and serve as the public voice of the office. He is a good mix of the tough-on-crime talk that the public seems to like, tempered by support for prosecutorial and judicial discretion to produce reasonable and compassionate results when appropriate. Most importantly, Shore is the most independent of the candidates. He is not afraid to speak up when he sees something inside the department that he feels needs to change, and he has not compromised himself through a web of backroom deals. For these reasons, we're supporting Jim Shore for DA.
Delores Carr’s endorsement, found at www.judgecarrforda.com
"I worked in the DA's office for more than 37 years and am well acquainted with all four candidates. I endorse and support Dolores Carr for District Attorney for two primary reasons. First, she has broad experience and has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities both inside and outside the DA's office. Second, and perhaps most important to me, she has a history of unquestioned integrity. I believe she will do a tremendous job serving the cause of justice in our community."
Dave Davies Asst. District Attorney (ret.) Santa Clara County
Also on her web site is a 3-part position paper on “Ethics of Justice in the DA’s Office.” The three installments are thorough, and go into detailed analysis of the issues addressed in the San Jose Mercury’s series “Tainted Trials, Stolen Justice” which ran in January of this year.

Karyn Sinunu’s endorsement from the current DA, found at www.sinunu4da.com
"Karyn Sinunu has the best experience handling all aspects of prosecuting the most serious criminal cases, and she has the best large-law-office management experience, and she has the best record of success managing justice-system projects, and her scholarship and work ethic are excellent."
-- George Kennedy
District Attorney Santa Clara County

Matthew’s Newspaper received an invitation to a fundraiser for Ms. Sinunu (they got my name from the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce), and my mom and I decided to attend so we could interview the candidate. We asked her about the two books she wrote, since she refers to these books in her statement in the voter information pamphlet. The books are Victims’ Rights and Hate Crimes. We also asked “What was the most exciting or interesting thing that happened to you in your job?” She said it was when she helped free a man who had been in jail for 12 years for a murder he didn’t commit.

Mail Carriers Get Tested on Speed of Delivery

On Friday, May 19th, we got to accompany our mailman, Reggie, and his boss, Josie, as they walked his route together. Josie told us that every two years, mail carriers are timed as they deliver the mail to see if they meet the standards set by their union.
Josie had all of the addresses programmed into a hand-held device. The addresses appeared in the order that Reggie delivers the mail in our neighborhood. She entered in the number of pieces of mail for each house, or, if there was no mail, the device automatically displayed the next address.
Josie said that Reggie would be rated to see if his delivery speed met, exceeded, or fell below the standard set by his union. The information is used to balance the carriers’ routes, so they can all finish their deliveries in the same amount of time.

Giants Baseball Recap
I got to see Barry Bonds hit his 714th home run against Oakland on May 20th. In Sunday’s game against Colorado (May 28th), he hit number 715. I’m glad he waited until a home game to do it. Now the Giants are in Florida for the first three games of a 6-game road stand. They lost the first game to Florida 5-1. After Florida, they travel to New York to play the Mets, then they come home to face the Marlins and the Pirates. I am going to the Pirates game on June 10th, so I can give a first-hand account of that game!

Kitty Corner – Your Cat’s Amazing Ears
Did you know that cats have 19 muscles in their ears? These muscles allow them to swivel their ears180° and turn them toward any sound. Cats’ ears are sensitive to even slight changes in atmospheric pressure and the earth’s magnetic field, so they can accurately predict storms and earthquakes. Cats can also hear sounds at higher frequencies than we can (50-65 KHz, compared to 18-20 KHz for humans). Your cat’s ears also give it great balance and the ability to always land on its feet. So help your cat take care of its ears! If it starts clawing at its ears, running around in circles, shaking or tilting its head, those are signs that something is wrong and your cat needs to see a veterinarian right away!

Grand Opening on Sunday, July 23, 2006!

Come visit Dr. Sawyer at Murphy Avenue Pet Clinic, located on the corner of Murphy Avenue and Hendy Avenue. He has separate entrances for cats and dogs.
If you’re a train fan, you’ll be glad to know that you can see all the action on the train tracks across from the clinic.
In the “cats” waiting area, he has “spicey micey” treats, and some neat pill wrapper treats (in case you have to trick your cat into taking a pill). We didn’t check the “dogs” waiting area, so we don’t know what he has on that side.
